The Breakfast Taco Book Hilah Johnson 9780988673625 Books

Hilah's Breakfast Tacos was a quick and funny read, had me smiling a few times and one real lol.

Entertaining, witty, with good recipes. I have variations of most of the recipes but had never made homemade chorizo, I tried and it was quite good and much less greasy than premade. This is a very good book for someone new to Mexican cooking, it has all the basics, the recipes are simple and will make you smile while learning too.

Making these things yourself allows you to control the salt and fat for healthier eating (gluten free is also possible). I use leftover homemade Mexican rice in my breakfast tacos, prefer it to potatoes. Rice and beans with a great homemade (or bought) salsa of your choice makes a terrific breakfast for an overnight vegetarian guest. Breakfast tacos served buffet style are a favorite of ours for a brunch when we have guests.

I have a very vivid imagaination that makes reading cookbooks in the the company of others embarrassing, all the lip smacking and drooling makes them not want to stay to dinner *see what I did there* Each description and recipe made me hungrier and salavating until I could stand it no more. I absolutely "had" to make breakfast tacos for dinner, nnum num....well, until the very end of the book that is. The last thing anyone would call me is a prude but after her friend's last story I couldn't force myself to look at a raw egg that evening (remember that vivid imagination?). That little culinary turn off took a star from the rating as well.

Hilah would be better served with a good editor who could restrain her from ending with an appetite destroying paragraph or a least not edit it herself on the morning of a night after.

The Breakfast Taco Book Hilah Johnson 9780988673625 Books Reviews

This book has recipes you will want to try. And each has a link to a video of the author preparing the item. I've tried many of her recipes and all have turned out good. But more importantly the book will get you to her web site and blog and you will want to stay connected. Hilah is a lot of fun to watch and she will help you feel more confident in the kitchen. And you will want more of her books and recipes.
I am ging to say something those giving low reviews probably haven't seen Hilah's show and don't get her style. Their loss. Is it a regular cookbook? Nope. Is it fun to read? Yes. Go get inspired, have a fun breakfast (or dinner like my family). I read the book on my computer so clicking through to the related videos is a breeze - and which I might add DO include actual recipes.
Burp. Tasty. Easy.
I am not a breakfast person, but even I know it's the most important meal of the day, so I thought I'd give Hilah Johnson's book a try. I'm glad I did. Her writing style is fresh, earthy, and no-nonsense, and she has packed this book full of ways to get a tasty breakfast on the table with a minimum of fuss. The first recipe I tried -- the microwave bacon -- was worth the price of admission (works with turkey bacon, too), but there's much more worth a taste.
There is no breakfast like breakfast tacos and, my eternal thanks to Hilah for introducing me to migas, which we enjoy several times a week. Check out her cooking channel on YouTube.
Book did not disappoint and I will look for other books by this author. It was a great read and a fun journey in making the perfect breakfast taco. There are nice pictures of most of the recipes and there are many video links where Hilah demonstrates how to prepare that recipe. Watch the video on how to properly scramble an egg - my family noticed the difference immediately.
If you don't live in a place where breakfast tacos are readily available at food trucks or mom and pop shops, you owe it to yourself to make your own, and this book shows you how. Not only does it show you how, it tells you why - why breakfast tacos are superior to the almost ubiquitous breakfast burritos. For less than the price of a beer at your local watering hole, you get clear and explicit directions on how to create a delicious and nutritious and portable and non-messy and moderate sized breakfast.

While I can find chorizo in markets within a day's drive, why would I want to when I can make it at home simply and without a flow chart? The links to the videos are a great plus, as it never hurts to have a demonstration, and, as we say in New England, Hilah is a hot sketch.
Okay, so this isn't exactly Cordon Bleu ... but it IS an interesting little book on one topic simple breakfast tacos. It's definitely a "starter" guide, but it has some fascinating info on the "history" of breakfast tacos and a look at some taco shacks in and around the author's home in Texas. Part travelogue, part food essay. Since the tacos themselves are very basic (corn tortilla + egg + one or two other ingredients) don't expect a wealth of unusual ideas or recipes.

Don't buy this book expecting a great deal and you won't be disappointed.

For what it's worth, I made the simple chorizo and egg taco this morning and found it a welcome change from my usual fare. So, for me it was worth the very modest price of the book.
