In November of 1999, photographer David Crosby set off on a dream trip; helping to pilot a 42' Grand Banks trawler 1300 miles down the Intra Coastal Waterway from Oxford, Maryland, to Sarasota, Florida. He only had two weeks to make the trip, as he'd promised his family that he'd be home in Greenville, SC for the Thanksgiving dinner.
David's two week long running conversation with Captain Rick, the owner's representative, turned the boat trip into something else. As they shared stories, Rick told of his travels and troubles, and David of his decades long effort to bring happiness to his wife Jenny while still leading a fun and exciting life along the way. From poverty to a clash with the law, college to success, living in a plantation house, a synagogue, living on a houseboat, building a log home and a farm, Crosby's candid story of his never ending efforts to fulfill Jenny's dreams fill the long hours of driving the boat.
Only after telling the whole story during the two week cruise does David realize that he will never make his wife happy. That's something only she can do for herself.
Part travelogue and part memoir, this engaging story of adventure and challenge is filled with the excitement of becoming a commercial photographer in the 1980's and 90's, and of the difficulties of trying to make someone else happy. It's a journey worth taking.

Keeping Us Afloat A Trip Down the ICW and A Journey Through A Marriage eBook David Crosby Reviews
A talented photographer has captured a snapshot of his life in the written word. An enjoyable read of patience, determination, love and adventure.
Very readable but far more about his temperamental X-wife than boating or the ICW..
excellent
This book is an easy read. It's chapters tell the tale of a wonderful boat trip down the Inter-Coastal Waterway, and a life that is difficult trying to keep his family "afloat". Mr Crosby is a talented photographer and story teller. The book is very interesting and there is a lot to be learned about life in this book. I recommend it!
In the beginning of this book, David dedicates it to his father for teaching him the art of story telling, and that could not be a more perfect dedication. This story is absolutely beautiful, it's about life and love and finding yourself. It's inspiring. I encourage the read, you'll be happy you did.
I really enjoyed this book. The writing was great and I enjoyed how David tied the journey and his marriage together to tell the story. Not only was the journey down the ICW a trip David enjoyed fully, but the love he had for his wife was beyond belief. To try everything possible to make his wife happy. This is a book I would recommend highly.
I knew the author early in his career and this helps me understand the path he trod. The use of the voyage to describe his self discovery was enlightening and appropriate. His success is well deserved.
Quite good reading . A lot of people can relate to David's situation even if you never set foot on a boat.
